0871 New Premium Rate Rules

From August 2009. Ofcom made the decision to formally recognise 0871 numbers as premium rate services (PRS), putting them under the remit of Phone-Paid Services Authority' Code of Practice.

Now being classified as premium rate, there are PSA guidelines that need to be followed by any company who wants to run a 0871 service. These regulations state that the cost of the call must be declared to the caller for transparency.

This can be done by having guide information next to where the number wherever it is advertised. Where it is not practical to display call costs, it is acceptable to provide pricing information on connection of the service which can be done as a recorded intro message uploaded onto the number.
